When Sewing Doll Clothes Patterns the Finishing Touches Make all the Difference

I love sewing my own doll clothes patterns (and anything at all for that matter) because when I have finished making the outfit, I know that it is a ‘one of a kind’.  No one else will have exactly the same outfit made from the same material and with the same finishing touches and I know my daughter feels pretty special when she dresses her doll in clothes that no one else has!

But what I love the most about making doll clothes is experimenting with different finishing touches as it is these little things that make all the difference.  It is amazing how just adding that little something can transform a plain outfit into something that is really special.  And have you ever noticed how using the same fabric but by adding a different color ribbon or lace, you can totally change the look of the outfit?

Some of the things I do to finish off an outfit include adding a bow, a sequin or motif to the bodice, some ribbon and/or lace to the hem line, a fancy button as a feature, some lace around the edge of a sleeve, ribbon around the bottom of the bodice, a contrasting trim around the waist and/or hemline and little tags sewn into the side seam.  The photos below show the variations and decisions I had to make when finishing off a dress for a My Child doll.  The colour of the trim was first, then I added the lace and …

When sewing doll clothes patterns for your child, ask them what things they may like on the outfit to finish it off.   Or if they are sewing the outfit themselves, make sure you have lots of little bits and pieces handy and encourage them to experiment with them.  Sometimes, what you first think will look great may not be quite right, and then what you least expect to look any good turns out being perfect!

It’s funny how when you realise just what a difference these finishing touches make to an outfit, you suddenly find yourself rescuing buttons, motifs and lace from old clothes before throwing them out.  Picking up little bits and pieces from the thrift shop (charity shop) and buying more craft ribbon when it is on special.

In my How to Make Doll Clothes online course I show you how to attach all these wonderful finishing touches so that when sewing your own doll clothes, you too can transform a plain outfit into a stunning creation!   So go on, tap into your creative juices and experiment with all sorts of different finishing touches next time you sew an outfit for your doll.  It really is amazing what you can create with some little bits and pieces and a little imagination.

Recycle your Childs Clothes when Sewing Doll Clothes Patterns

We all know how quickly kids grow these days and how good clothes seem to ‘shrink’ overnight, but have you thought about using these clothes when sewing doll clothes patterns?

I had an email from a customer the other day who was having difficulty finding suitable stretch fabric to make the underpants pattern.  I emailed her back suggesting that if she had a t-shirt that she no longer wore, perhaps she could make the underpants from the fabric in this shirt.  My customer was thrilled with this suggestion as she had a whole bag of clothes that she had put aside to give away and in it was a t-shirt that would be perfect for the job.  She also started looking at all the other things in the bag and suddenly her imagination was working overtime….this would make up into a lovely dress and these would be great as long pants.

I love using clothes my kids grow out of when sewing doll clothes patterns because it quite often saves time when you can say, use the hem of the shirt as the hem on the doll’s new skirt.   You also save money because you are not buying new fabric all the time and if you are like me, you always tend to buy too much material.  But the best reason for using your child’s favourite clothes that they have grown out of when sewing doll clothes patterns, is to keeps fond memories alive!  Every time your child dresses their doll in the outfit you made from their favourite shirt or dress, they will think of all the wonderful times they had and how much they loved wearing that outfit.  I’m sure it will become their doll’s favourite outfit too.

Take a look at the video below, where I show you how I transformed one of my daughter’s favourite shirts into her doll’s favourite dress.  Enjoy!

If you enjoyed this tip I literally have hundreds more in my How to Sew Doll Clothes Video Course, so come and check it out.

Teaching Your Daughter to Sew Doll Clothes

I love a story with a happy ending and it was wonderful to receive an email from a mom thanking me for my ‘How to Make Doll Clothes’ online video course.  You see, Mom has been sewing for years and was wrapped when her daughter asked her to teach her how to sew.  It just wasn’t working though, because every time they sat down at the sewing machine, they would end up arguing and it was becoming too stressful.  She was just about to give up when she found my online course.

She tells me, ‘ Sonya  has worked through the first two modules, made up the free patterns that came with week 1 & week 2 and is eagerly waiting for next week….she is learning to sew and the stress is gone….I can’t believe the difference and it only cost me $37.00! ‘

Mom and Daughter sewing doll clothes patterns

It was after this email that I realized it doesn’t matter how patient Mom is, sometimes parents and kids butt heads.  Often, the best solution is to let someone else do the teaching and Mom can be there for the important support and encouragement along the way.   So it is wonderful to know that I have been able to help this Mom and daughter with my online course.

If your child is at the age where they can use a sewing machine but you are not sure how to go about teaching them (or simply don’t have the time), my ‘How to Sew Doll Clothes’ video course is perfect.  The course is split over 6 weeks and the videos are super easy to follow.  The child can work at their own pace and Mom can be there to praise and encourage along the way.   The American Girl Doll Clothes Patterns that are included with the course also come with full step-by-step video support and are a great way to practice the newly learnt sewing skills.

So find out more about my How to Make Doll Clothes online video course and try it today.

“I thought I knew how to sew but I learned a lot from Rosie’s How to Make Doll Clothes video course. I now do a lot more flat sewing on other patterns and it makes such a difference. Also, her way of doing elastic is fantastic. I use some other patterns for doll clothes, but I always think about how Rosie would put it together and do it her way. Love Rosie and her great support.”
