We all know how quickly kids grow these days and how good clothes seem to ‘shrink’ overnight, but have you thought about using these clothes when sewing doll clothes patterns?
I had an email from a customer the other day who was having difficulty finding suitable stretch fabric to make the underpants pattern. I emailed her back suggesting that if she had a t-shirt that she no longer wore, perhaps she could make the underpants from the fabric in this shirt. My customer was thrilled with this suggestion as she had a whole bag of clothes that she had put aside to give away and in it was a t-shirt that would be perfect for the job. She also started looking at all the other things in the bag and suddenly her imagination was working overtime….this would make up into a lovely dress and these would be great as long pants.
I love using clothes my kids grow out of when sewing doll clothes patterns because it quite often saves time when you can say, use the hem of the shirt as the hem on the doll’s new skirt. You also save money because you are not buying new fabric all the time and if you are like me, you always tend to buy too much material. But the best reason for using your child’s favourite clothes that they have grown out of when sewing doll clothes patterns, is to keeps fond memories alive! Every time your child dresses their doll in the outfit you made from their favourite shirt or dress, they will think of all the wonderful times they had and how much they loved wearing that outfit. I’m sure it will become their doll’s favourite outfit too.
Take a look at the video below, where I show you how I transformed one of my daughter’s favourite shirts into her doll’s favourite dress. Enjoy!

I’m thrilled that I purchased this video course. I look forward to many hours of fun making doll clothes for my five grand daughters. I may be a grandma, but I have two American Girl dolls myself. Guess that’s why I’m the favorite grandma. 🙂
That’s fantastic Ann, thank you so much for sharing your excitement with me. I’m sure you and your grand daughters will have lots of fun choosing fabrics, making the doll clothes and of course playing with your dolls. Everyone needs a grandma just like you!
